Adding HTML Help to Your Applications
Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation Chapter 25.pdf
Sample Chapter 25 of Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation: Online help has become pretty much a given these days. The previous version of Windows Help, WinHelp, was tough to implement and not that useful. The new version, HTML Help, is wonderful. In this chapter, I’ll show you how to use HTML Help Workshop and how to incorporate an HTML Help file with your application.

Avoiding Common Problems in Help files
ithh_sc05.pdf
To develop truly helpful online help, writers need to think like potential users, include information to answer their questions at an appropriate level of detail, and make the information easy to find. This chapter describes the 10 most common complaints that users have with online help, the underlying problems that lead to these complaints, and ways to identify the problems and avoid or fix them.

Building Distributed Applications over HTTP
Internet Applications with VFP Chapter 07.pdf
Sample Chapter 7 of Internet Applications with VFP: HTTP is much more than just a protocol used by the Web browser for transmitting HTML. In this chapter I'll show you how to use HTTP generically from a Visual FoxPro client application to execute logic on a Web server that is also running Visual FoxPro. You'll see how to retrieve content and data over HTTP, fire logic on the server and handle bidirectional transfer of data using familiar SQL commands over HTTP. This approach allows you to build rich GUI applications that take advantage of the distributed nature of the Internet without having to conform to a limited HTML interface. Using the techniques described here, you can extend the reach of existing applications across the Internet with minimal amounts of code—using all native Visual FoxPro code.

Combos and Listbox
1001 Things You Wanted to Know about VFP Chapter 05.pdf
Example Chapter 05 from 1001 Things You Wanted to Know about VFP: Combos and lists are two very powerful controls that allow the user to select from a predetermined set of values. Used properly, they provide a valuable means of ensuring data validity. Used improperly, they can be your worst nightmare. If you use a combo box to present the user with thousands of items, you are asking for trouble! In this chapter, we present some handy combo and lists classes that can be used to provide a polished, professional interface while significantly reducing your development time.

Creating and Managing COM Components
Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide Chapter 06.pdf
Sample Chapter 6 of Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide: Microsoft’s Component Object Model (COM) is one of those technologies that simply makes sense. It is a natural fit for object-oriented development and n-tier design. COM allows you to make your VFP objects available to other software and programming environments, thus making a flexible technology for business components in the middle tier. We will show how to build COM components, the different types of COM components available, how to register them, and how to manage them with the Component Gallery. As well, we will touch on error-handling issues with COM and special considerations when using COM and Microsoft Transaction Server.

Creating Charts and Graphs
MegaFox 1002 Things You Wanted to Know About Extending Visual FoxPro Chapter 06.pdf
Sample Chapter 6 of MegaFox 1002 Things You Wanted to Know About Extending Visual FoxPro: It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true when analyzing trends in financial applications. Viewing the data in a graphical format is usually more meaningful than merely reviewing a bunch of numbers in a spreadsheet. In this chapter, we will explore several mechanisms by which we can generate graphs to be displayed on forms or printed in reports. (Note: Creating graphs for display in web pages can be accomplished using the Office Web Components. This is covered in Chapter 16: VFP on the Web).

Customizing Your Development Environment
Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation Chapter 16.pdf
Sample Chapter 15 of Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation: It never ceases to amaze me to walk into a development shop and see how the developers work. The most mind-numbing experience is to watch a developer start up Visual FoxPro, and then issue three or four attempts of the “CD <current app dev directory>” command as his first step—because VFP’s default location is still set somewhere deep in the bowels of Program Files. Think of all the time you spend building applications to make other people more productive. Doesn’t it make sense to tune your own work environment? In this chapter, I’ll show you a number of techniques that you can use to make your daily work easier and more bug-proof.

Data - Views
Effective Techniques for Application Development with VFP Chapter 05.pdf
Sample Chapter 5 of Effective Techniques for Application Development with VFP: Views, a new feature introduced with Visual FoxPro, provide a way to take a new approach to many aspects of our applications. At the simplest, views represent a way of storing queries within the Visual FoxPro database container. They can, if desired, be used exclusively to provide the interface between forms, code and the data tables.

Developing a Logical Data Model
Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide Chapter 02.pdf
Sample Chapter 2 of Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide: Data is the heart of our Visual FoxPro applications. Getting data safely stored and updated in our databases is our “bread and butter.” Crucial to doing this is good design for our data model. We need to understand the difference between the logical data model, discussed here, and the physical data model, discussed in Chapter 8, “Creating a Physical Database,” as we move through this design process. Without good design, we’ll always be fighting the awkwardness and integrity problems to which poor design gives rise.

DevGuide: The Sales Call
DevGuide3_11SalesCall_sample.pdf
Sample Chapter 11 of Developers Guide 3: In one of his early comedy albums, Bill Cosby hypothesized that graduation from a karate class was not the ultimate goal of taking such a class. Rather, he said, “Eventually, you want to get attacked.” In a similar vein, while the goal of marketing is initially to get phone calls, ultimately, it’s to make a sales call. More so than the phone call, an in-person visit is your best chance to set expectations while at the same time determining whether you want the job. This chapter covers the in-person sales call in detail.

DevGuide3_03TypesOfProcesses_sample.pdf
Sample Chapter 3 of Developers Guide 3: Just as the earlier editions of this book were targeted at a specific group of developers, they were also targeted at a specific type of process—the so-called waterfall method. But not all development fits into this one method, any more than all developers are the same or all development is the same. In this chapter, I’ll discuss what your options are for developing a custom software application.

Extending Remote Views with SQL Pass Through
ClientServer Apps with VFP and SQL Server Chapter 06.pdf
Sample Chapter 06 ClientServer Apps with VFP and SQL Server: As you learned in Chapter 4, remote views make it very easy to access remote data. Remote views are actually wrappers for SQL pass through, handling the tasks of managing connections, detecting changes, formatting UPDATE commands and submitting them to the server. In this chapter, we’re going to take an in-depth look at SQL pass through. We’ll see how to connect to the server, submit queries, manage transactions and more.

Forms
Effective Techniques for Application Development with VFP Chapter 09.pdf
Sample Chapter 9 Effective Techniques for Application Development with VFP: In many ways, the forms for an application are what it's all about—everything else is just along to hand 'em the saw! Forms allow the user to interact with the data, so from the user's standpoint, forms can arguably be considered the "heart" of the application. This chapter begins to look at forms as containers for the form controls that are discussed in chapters 10 and 11, and discusses issues that relate to forms without regard to what you put on them and what data they manipulate.

Hackers Guide 6.0: DBF, FPT, CDX, DBC - Hike!
HackFox6 S1C2.doc
The transition from the FoxPro 2.x model of the universe to the Visual FoxPro mindset was pretty revolutionary on a lot of fronts. While we cringe to use the hackneyed and overused term, the introduction of databases in Visual FoxPro was a major paradigm shift and one that took some getting used to. The introduction of the database container, local and remote views, vast improvements in client-server connectivity, and a slew of new data types, commands, and functions was mind-boggling. We'll try to give you an overview of the data changes here, and refer you to areas where you can get more information throughout the book.

Hackers Guide 6.0: Faster Than a Speeding Bullet
HackFox6 S3C4.doc
Speed is where it's at. No client is going to pay you to make his app run slower. Fox Software's initial claim to fame was that FoxBASE (and later, FoxBASE+ and FoxPro) ran faster than its competitors. Fox's reputation for speed was well deserved. However, the speed gain has never been automatic. You have to do things right to make your code "run like the Fox."

Hackers Guide 6.0: Productive Debugging
HackFox6 S2C4.doc
Our programs run correctly the first time, every time. Yeah, right—if you believe that one, we have a bridge in Brooklyn we'd like to sell you. We figure we spend at least as much time debugging our programs as we do writing them in the first place. If your programs do run correctly the first time, every time, you can skip this part of the book. In fact, you should write a book and tell us how to do it. For the rest of you, we'll take a look at the kinds of errors that occur in programs, give you some ideas on how to root them out and show how VFP can aid your efforts.

Internet Application Technologies
Internet Applications with VFP Chapter 02.pdf
Sample Chapter 2 of Internet Applications with VFP: The first thing that you'll notice when starting to build Web applications is new terminology. Building Internet applications is more involved than building stand-alone applications because you have to deal with multiple environments simultaneously. With this additional complexity comes terminology. The bad news is that you have to become familiar with lots of three- and four-letter acronyms; the good news is that most of these technologies are easy to work with once you have a broad view of how they fit together. This chapter provides this broad overview. It talks about the technologies and information flow for distributed and Web applications, and discusses a number of the terms you need to know.

Sample Chapter 1 of The Visual FoxPro Report Writer: Reports are key to a successful software application. It could even be argued that both commercial and custom applications can be judged by how well they generate output. After all, it doesn’t matter how efficiently the users can enter data, how much information the system can store, or how many complicated calculations the system can process if there’s no way to see the final outcome of all that work.

Debugging Visual FoxPro Applications Chapter 01.pdf
Sample Chapter 01 Debugging Visual FoxPro Applications: Debugging is just about everybody’s least favorite activity. On the other hand, a lot of time and money goes into debugging. Rarely is it possible to estimate accurately how long debugging will take, and generally project management systems fail to capture debugging time. Thus, it bears discussing how debugging fits into the project lifecycle, and to examine whether the task of debugging is necessary.

Release and Post-Release Tips
DeployFox08.pdf
Release day is finally here! The process of moving an application into production is the end of a long road traveled. Depending on the project, you might spend hours, weeks, months, or even years of blood, sweat, and tears getting ready for this big event. Now the light at the end of the tunnel approaches. Is it the sun at the end of the tunnel or a freight train about to run you over? Deploying a project into production can go smoothly, or not, depending on the planning and attention to detail.

Report Variables
The Visual FoxPro Report Writer Chapter 08.pdf
Sample Chapter 8 of The Visual FoxPro Report Writer: Variables are essential to developing software. It would be impossible to create a practical application without them. Reports are no different! There are many situations when variables are essential to developing reports. You might need a variable to count the number of lines on a page or to track the total sales amount for each customer. Perhaps, you need to count the number of customers for each Sales Rep. Whatever the reason, the Visual FoxPro Report Writer provides a mechanism for creating and maintaining variables within a report.

SourceSafe in Theory and Practice
Essential SourceSafe Chapter 02.pdf
Sample Chapter 2 of Essential SourceSafe: So far, Chapter 1, “Visual SourceSafe Installation,” helped you install Visual SourceSafe and configure it. This chapter looks at what SourceSafe does for you—how it stores information, how it presents your projects, and how you can check files in and out and track changes. This chapter explains what SourceSafe is doing with operations named checkout, check in, difference, branch, pin and merge. In this chapter, you get to run the Visual SourceSafe client, also called the Explorer, create a sample project and source code, and exercise the functions made available through the VSS Explorer interface. The last portion of this chapter reviews each of the dialogs presented by SourceSafe, pointing out important features and hazards.

Three-Tiered Development
Advanced Object Oriented Programming with VFP Chapter 09.pdf
Sample Chapter 09 Advanced Object Oriented Programming with VFP: Lately there's been a lot of hype about three-tiered development. The main idea is to split applications into different layers—the interface, the business logic and the data back end. Many people tout three-tiered development as the best thing since sliced bread. While it can't cure world hunger, it definitely helps me a great deal in my development efforts.

Using SourceSafe to Maintain a SourceSafe Database
sourcesafe_maintainsourcesafe.pdf
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe is a version control system used for storing source code, text files, web content or any other type or document where ownership, tracking and revision history is important. However, the Visual SourceSafe (VSS) database must have regular maintenance performed to ensure that it is kept in good shape and does not encounter corruption. Like remembering to get the oil changed or scheduling that appointment with the dentist, it is really easy to let maintenance slide. And like other maintenance chores, there can be serious consequences to neglect. This article shows how, with a little work up front, an administrator can automate the routine maintenance, keep an eye on what's going on, and be alerted to database problems. One of the real hassles with using SourceSafe's Analyze utility is interpreting the results intelligently. The method shown here minimizes the noise, so administrators can see right through to any changes they might need to be concerned with.

Using VFP’s Object-Oriented Tools
Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation Chapter 10.pdf
Sample Chapter 10 Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation: Next to SQL, the most wonderful feature of Visual FoxPro is its implementation of object-oriented programming. To skip this chapter would be one of the biggest mistakes of your programming life. In this chapter I’m going to show you what object-oriented programming is, with examples that will make sense to you, a database programmer; how VFP’s object-oriented tools work; and how to incorporate them into the forms that you’ve already learned how to build. Finally, I’ll set you up with your own set of baseclasses that you can use to start building real-world applications—today.

Creating Visual FoxPro Apps with Visual FoxExpress Chapter 18.pdf
Sample Chapter 18 Creating Visual FoxPro Apps with Visual FoxExpress: The main purpose of most business applications is to collect data and produce information. The most common way of returning the information is in the form of reports. The data might also need to be inserted into a spreadsheet or other format, which would allow further analysis by the user to produce the required information. In this chapter, we’ll take a look at how to accomplish all of this.

WebConnect: How a Web Page Works
WebRAD Building Database Apps on the Web with Web Connection Chapter 09.pdf
Sample Chapter 9 of WebRAD Building Database Apps on the Web with Web Connection: The language used on a Web page is HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. Hypertext is the part of the Web that allows for the linking together of Web content through the use of clickable “hyperlinks.” The markup language defines the document form. Remember back in grade school getting an essay back, “marked up” with symbols stating that an item should be capitalized, or a new paragraph should begin here? Well, that is pretty much what HTML does for a Web page. In this chapter I will cover what makes up a well formed Web page, what the different sections are, how to use JavaScript for form validations, and how Web Connection can process a page that contains embedded expressions.
