FoxRockX200804.pdf
Sybase (formerly Extended Systems) offers the new version 9.0 of Advantage Database Server. The first feature mentioned in the press release published March 17th, 2008 consists in the unique support for the Visual FoxPro file format. Now you can work with DBF tables on the server with no direct access to the tables by the end user, no damaged index files, and you can even use ODBC. Doug Hennig took a close look at the pros and cons from a VFP perspective in this free special issue of FoxRockX magazine.

General fields to Blob fields
GeneralToBlob.zip
The new Blob data type in VFP 9 is a General killer--they're much easier to work with than General. Unfortunately, there isn't an easy way to convert the contents of existing General fields into Blob fields; once you've put an image into a General field, it's all but impossible to get it back out. GeneralToBlobListener is a ReportListener subclass that handles this task painlessly. Last updated: 2005-01-08

Multi-User and Data Buffering Issues
Multi User and Data Buffering Issues.doc
In FoxPro 2.x, developers edited records using scatter memvar, editing the memory variables, and gather memvar. The purpose of this indirect editing of fields was to protect the record by buffering it. With Visual FoxPro, data buffering is built in, so fields can be edited directly. This session will discuss how data buffering works and explores strategies for selecting which buffering mechanism to use and how to handle multi-user conflicts.
