ADS: Special issue Advantage Database Server for Visual FoxPro Developers
FoxRockX200804.pdf
Sybase (formerly Extended Systems) offers the new version 9.0 of Advantage Database Server. The first feature mentioned in the press release published March 17th, 2008 consists in the unique support for the Visual FoxPro file format. Now you can work with DBF tables on the server with no direct access to the tables by the end user, no damaged index files, and you can even use ODBC. Doug Hennig took a close look at the pros and cons from a VFP perspective in this free special issue of FoxRockX magazine.

Advanced Client\Server in Visual FoxPro
Advanced Client Server in Visual FoxPro.doc
SQL pass-through allows for connection, and communication, with back end servers. Unlike remote views, connection information is not stored in the database but has to be re-established each time. Once the connection has been established, you can use other pass-through commands to execute stored procedures, back end triggers and rules, initiate remote transaction processing. Further, SQL pass-through commands can be used with Visual FoxPro parameters (with some limitations). The processing itself may occur in batch or non batch mode and in synchronous or asynchronous mode.

Advanced Client-Server Functionality in Visual FoxPro
Advanced Client Server Functionality in Visual FoxPro.doc
The advanced client-server capabilities of Microsoft Visual FoxPro™, for the most part, revolve around the setting of properties for named and unnamed connections, remote views, and cursors. These properties are readable through DBGETPROP, CURSORGETPROP and SQLGETPROP. Conversely, these properties can be written to using DBSETPROP, CURSORSETPROP and SQLSETPROP. In this paper we will be looking at different scenarios where these properties are manipulated to perform advanced client-server procedures. Specifically, we explore techniques for updating remote tables, fetching remote data, creating heterogeneous joins, dynamic view connections and shared view connections.

Advanced Visual FoxPro Controls
Advanced Visual FoxPro Controls.doc
Controls are the means by which the user interacts with a Visual FoxPro Application. Therefore the quality and capabilities of an application, as measured by the end-user, are directly related to how well the user is able to manipulate the application through the application’s controls. No matter how well a data model is implemented, the application cannot be considered a success if the user-interface is clumsy or inefficient. The goal of this session is to describe in detail the Visual FoxPro control set and demonstrate how to implement good solid user interfaces using Visual FoxPro controls.

Many developers use this function directly and liberally throughout the source code of their application. In many situations, this is perfectly acceptable; in many other situations this approach is far too inflexible.

Basic three-tier-application building
V18 Basic three-tier-application building.ppt
You've certainly heard about Three-Tier Applications. But has a car with three tiers ever been a big seller? As far as I know, it hasn't, and the same goes for Multi-Tier Applications. In general they need many more than just three tiers to really bring about the advantages promised. But has a car with 6 or more tiers (also known as a truck) ever been really fast? So someone tells you to be "scalable". This means that different tiers are attached to different cars and they should all roll along together in the same direction. Sounds like a real management and integration problem, doesn't it? (So you need more server hardware, more server operating systems, more software of all kinds, and, uh yes, consultants.) Maybe you have to get rid of some tiers to become fast again. Consider a motorbike! It runs fast on two tiers, and in heavy traffic in the city it curves around all those cars with more tiers. That said, we will build a multi-tiered application and afterwards think about how to get rid of certain tiers in special circumstances.

Building Distributed Applications over HTTP
Internet Applications with VFP Chapter 07.pdf
Sample Chapter 7 of Internet Applications with VFP: HTTP is much more than just a protocol used by the Web browser for transmitting HTML. In this chapter I'll show you how to use HTTP generically from a Visual FoxPro client application to execute logic on a Web server that is also running Visual FoxPro. You'll see how to retrieve content and data over HTTP, fire logic on the server and handle bidirectional transfer of data using familiar SQL commands over HTTP. This approach allows you to build rich GUI applications that take advantage of the distributed nature of the Internet without having to conform to a limited HTML interface. Using the techniques described here, you can extend the reach of existing applications across the Internet with minimal amounts of code—using all native Visual FoxPro code.

Building Server Services with VFP
V17 Building Server Services with VFP.ppt
A remote application on the server is very useful if you've got a network application. In contrast to a call via CreateObjectX, a server application running as a service is really separated from the front-end application, and it continues working when the user logs off (or even never logs in). You can use it for database reorganisation, backups, or long-running or scheduled business tasks. In this session you will learn how to build, install (on Windows NT) and use such a service, which problems may arise, and how to integrate with COM objects. Additionally you will see a running example of a server service.

Building Three-Tier Client-Server Business Solutions
Building Three Tier Client Server Business Solutions.doc
Multitier architecture offers a compelling way to develop client-server business solutions. It is technology-neutral and can be implemented on any vendor’s technology that enables standard interfaces for each of the logical levels called “tiers.” With an emphasis on clean interfaces between tiers, the implementation details are hidden from users. The functionality of each tier, called “components,” can be written in many different languages and maintained independently. This capacity allows the developer to use many tools from his or her toolbox to get the job done quickly and correctly. Just as you wouldn’t expect a carpenter to have only a hammer, a developer will not have only a single development tool.

With a membership of about 1000 persons and companies, the German speaking FoxPro User Group (dFPUG) ranges among the larger ones of the user groups of software and database developers in the German-speaking Microsoft world. To its members the dFPUG offers ample services and technical support with object-oriented programming and relational database design in Visual FoxPro and SQL Server. Among the services of the dFPUG there are the loose-leaf periodical “FoxxProfessional” (200 pages per quarter), a large website including an online forum, regional meetings in twelve cities and the annual FoxPro developers conference in Frankfurt. On its 10th anniversary, the user group intended to rework its publishing process as well as the retrieval facilities for technical documents to make them much faster and more efficient. Today, the new portal provides powerful online access to the large and varied stock of published material.

Converting Your Existing Applications to Visual FoxPro 3
Converting Your Existing Applications to Visual FoxPro 3.doc
Visual FoxPro 3.0 has opened up a wealth of new developer tools that can only be considered as revolutionary for the FoxPro programmer. From object orientation to visual form and class tools, the whole application scheme has been revamped. Even though Visual FoxPro’s new environment provides a whole new way of doing things, your existing FoxPro 2.6 application can be almost seamlessly integrated into this brave new developer environment. The expansiveness of the new FoxPro features can be daunting, but this is mitigated by the conversion utilities built into VFP. This paper will look at how you go about converting your existing 2.6 application in Visual FoxPro. With this conversion you can start using these wonderful new features while still leveraging your existing development investment.

Creating and Managing COM Components
Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide Chapter 06.pdf
Sample Chapter 6 of Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide: Microsoft’s Component Object Model (COM) is one of those technologies that simply makes sense. It is a natural fit for object-oriented development and n-tier design. COM allows you to make your VFP objects available to other software and programming environments, thus making a flexible technology for business components in the middle tier. We will show how to build COM components, the different types of COM components available, how to register them, and how to manage them with the Component Gallery. As well, we will touch on error-handling issues with COM and special considerations when using COM and Microsoft Transaction Server.

MegaFox 1002 Things You Wanted to Know About Extending Visual FoxPro Chapter 06.pdf
Sample Chapter 6 of MegaFox 1002 Things You Wanted to Know About Extending Visual FoxPro: It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. This is especially true when analyzing trends in financial applications. Viewing the data in a graphical format is usually more meaningful than merely reviewing a bunch of numbers in a spreadsheet. In this chapter, we will explore several mechanisms by which we can generate graphs to be displayed on forms or printed in reports. (Note: Creating graphs for display in web pages can be accomplished using the Office Web Components. This is covered in Chapter 16: VFP on the Web).

Customizing Your Development Environment
Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation Chapter 16.pdf
Sample Chapter 15 of Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation: It never ceases to amaze me to walk into a development shop and see how the developers work. The most mind-numbing experience is to watch a developer start up Visual FoxPro, and then issue three or four attempts of the “CD <current app dev directory>” command as his first step—because VFP’s default location is still set somewhere deep in the bowels of Program Files. Think of all the time you spend building applications to make other people more productive. Doesn’t it make sense to tune your own work environment? In this chapter, I’ll show you a number of techniques that you can use to make your daily work easier and more bug-proof.

Data Design

Designing an application requires many decisions even before you begin writing the first line of code. Obviously, the first decision must be to define the purpose of the program. Then you need to determine what features you need, including reports, data entry screens, data display screens, and menus. This is also a good time to determine what data must be stored to support these activities and how to structure this data into logical tables.

Developing a Logical Data Model
Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide Chapter 02.pdf
Sample Chapter 2 of Visual FoxPro Certification Exam Study Guide: Data is the heart of our Visual FoxPro applications. Getting data safely stored and updated in our databases is our “bread and butter.” Crucial to doing this is good design for our data model. We need to understand the difference between the logical data model, discussed here, and the physical data model, discussed in Chapter 8, “Creating a Physical Database,” as we move through this design process. Without good design, we’ll always be fighting the awkwardness and integrity problems to which poor design gives rise.

This chapter covers the in-person sales call in detail.

Forms allow the user to interact with the data, so from the user's standpoint, forms can arguably be considered the "heart" of the application. This chapter begins to look at forms as containers for the form controls that are discussed in chapters 10 and 11, and discusses issues that relate to forms without regard to what you put on them and what data they manipulate.

Most folks who are moving to Linux from Windows use distributions that by default have Linux start up with the GUI. All fine and good, but one side effect is that they often get stymied when they need to boot Linux to a text-based interface. This document describes how to perform a number of basic tasks in Linux, using only the text-based interface.

Hackers Guide 6.0: DBF, FPT, CDX, DBC - Hike!

The transition from the FoxPro 2.x model of the universe to the Visual FoxPro mindset was pretty revolutionary on a lot of fronts. While we cringe to use the hackneyed and overused term, the introduction of databases in Visual FoxPro was a major paradigm shift and one that took some getting used to. The introduction of the database container, local and remote views, vast improvements in client-server connectivity, and a slew of new data types, commands, and functions was mind-boggling. We'll try to give you an overview of the data changes here, and refer you to areas where you can get more information throughout the book.

However, the speed gain has never been automatic. You have to do things right to make your code "run like the Fox."

Installing Fedora Core Linux
installation_fedoracore.pdf
In mid 2003, Red Hat spun off their mainstream Red Hat distribution into a true Open Source project called "Fedora Core". FC, as it's known, differs from Red Hat Linux in a couple of specific ways first, you can only get it by downloading ISOs (or getting them from a friend), and second, it'll be updated on a regular basis, but strictly through Open Source means. Some have taken these changes to mean that FC will be unstable or otherwise unworthy of attention anymore, and thus have been reluctant to give it a try. That's not really fair most people think that FC is on a par with where "Red Hat 10" would have been at this time. Some people may not be convinced, so to give those doubting Thomas's in the audience a preview of what FC looks like, I use a liberal number of screen shots as well as detailed supporting explanations to show you how to install Fedora Core from scratch for desktop usage.

Internet Application Technologies
Internet Applications with VFP Chapter 02.pdf
Sample Chapter 2 of Internet Applications with VFP: The first thing that you'll notice when starting to build Web applications is new terminology. Building Internet applications is more involved than building stand-alone applications because you have to deal with multiple environments simultaneously. With this additional complexity comes terminology. The bad news is that you have to become familiar with lots of three- and four-letter acronyms; the good news is that most of these technologies are easy to work with once you have a broad view of how they fit together. This chapter provides this broad overview. It talks about the technologies and information flow for distributed and Web applications, and discusses a number of the terms you need to know.

And the FoxPro conferences I always enjoyed most as they are the best on earth from my perspective. I am really sorry about each one I missed for whatever reason. Surely the FoxPro DevCons are smaller nowadays, which is a pity as the number of topics you need to know about has increased each year. Therefore developers have to attend other conferences as well.

Introduction to the Grid Control
Introduction to the Grid Control.doc
A Grid Control is the tabularization of data that may be presented in a form. Most of the events and properties associated with forms and the controls on the forms may be applied to the grid control (and cells of the grid control) as well. There are at the minimum three levels of containership with respect to a grid control: Grid, Columns, Headers and Controls. The distinctions might be best understood this way: A grid is merely a container column, a column is a vertical group of cells (like data) which may contain other controls.

It could even be argued that both commercial and custom applications can be judged by how well they generate output. After all, it doesn’t matter how efficiently the users can enter data, how much information the system can store, or how many complicated calculations the system can process if there’s no way to see the final outcome of all that work.

Linux Network Printing with JetDirect
networking_linuxnetworkprintingwithjetdirect.pdf
Hewlett Packard's JetDirect print server allows you to make a printer available to an entire network simply by plugging an Ethernet cable into the JetDirect device which then connects to the printer. All that's left is a little configuration. Or so the marketing literature says. It's a little more complicated than that in the real world, where you have to know all of the steps, and follow them in order. That said, once the entire process is laid out line by line, hooking up a JetDirect print server is fairly straightforward.

Visual FoxPro 3.0 is a giant leap forward for FoxPro. It comes with an entirely new set of tools, commands & functions, programming constructs, expanded system capacities and an entirely new programming paradigm. Even with all of these changes, practically all existing FoxPro applications can be migrated to 3.0 with almost no effort. This session will focus on getting FoxPro 2.x applications to run in 3.0, how the FoxPro 2.x model maps to the Visual FoxPro 3.0 model, areas of conversion which may not work 100%, and things to look out for in general.

Moving from FoxPro 2.x to Visual FoxPro 5.0
Moving from FoxPro 2x to Visual FoxPro 5.doc
Visual FoxPro 5.0 can run most FoxPro 2.x applications with just a simple recompile. However, to take full advantage of the new features in their existing applications, developers will need to convert FoxPro 2.x code to the new object-oriented programming paradigm. The purpose of this paper is to help FoxPro developers understand the issues involved with converting their existing applications. We will present three approaches to converting your applications, and provide detailed information about the conversion process. Applying the information in this paper to your specific applications will help you make informed decisions about whether to simply run existing applications under Visual FoxPro 5.0, or to convert them to the new paradigm.

Developing any application for use in a multi-user environment can be a very tricky operation, particularly if the application is reliant on an underlying database. The users of the system expect it to be robust, easy to use, and perhaps most important, fast. Database application developers are frequently lulled into a false sense of security that multi-user programming is easy. After all, it’s just a simple matter of locking a few records, writing the data, then releasing the locks, right? What could be simpler?

The terminology associated with object orientation may seem confusing at first. Why do we need terms like class and method when function has always done the job perfectly well in the past? The reason is that the job has changed somewhat. Instead of calling a function to perform a task on some data, we ask the data to perform that task on itself, using whatever method that class of data normally uses.

Performance has always been one of the hallmarks of the Microsoftâ FoxPro® database management system, particularly in the database engine. With the introduction of the Visual FoxPro™ relational database development system and its associated object model, enhanced engine, and client/server features, the overall product becomes much more powerful. The downside of all that power, however, is that the product is more complex. So, while developing robust, object-oriented applications that may also use data from remote data stores becomes easier, it also becomes easier to create slow applications.

This article discusses the condition of dates data in existing tables, and the steps to consider when you adjust applications in preparation for the year 2000. It also explains how to use the Visual FoxPro 5.0 "Set Century To" value and "Rollover" clause, and the aspects of using a class to control all environment variables in a project.

You use PrgToVcx whenever you want to convert program class definitions in PRG files to visual class definitions in VCX files. PrgToVcx is designed to handle all class types, but cannot be fully relied upon to import all exported code from VFP’s Class Browser due to inconsistencies between VFP’s language and visual implementations. We’ve documented the known cases and are interested in hearing about any other trouble you may have with importing.

Debugging Visual FoxPro Applications Chapter 01.pdf
Sample Chapter 01 Debugging Visual FoxPro Applications: Debugging is just about everybody’s least favorite activity. On the other hand, a lot of time and money goes into debugging. Rarely is it possible to estimate accurately how long debugging will take, and generally project management systems fail to capture debugging time. Thus, it bears discussing how debugging fits into the project lifecycle, and to examine whether the task of debugging is necessary.

Subclassing Visual FoxPro Base Classes
Subclassing Visual FoxPro Base Classes.doc
To subclass or not to subclass, that's the question. When, if ever, should you use Visual FoxPro base classes directly in your applications? At DevCon 95 and during the Visual FoxPro beta, the conventional wisdom was that developers should subclass all of Visual FoxPro's base classes. I went with the crowd at first, but then I changed course and used the Visual FoxPro-provided base classes directly. This article is about a bad decision and a learning experience that I want to pass along to the readers of this fine publication. I debated this process all during the beta and finally saw the light I was looking for.

Many hard-core and experienced users never use the GUI, and there are uses for Linux for which a GUI would be out of place. This GUI-less world sports an interface that can be entered by using a tool similar to the Windows command window or DOS prompt. In this whitepaper, I will discuss how to get under the hood by using the Linux command window.

The model includes a set of built-in classes that you use as a basis for creating your own classes. These built-in classes are called base classes.

Three-Tiered Development
Advanced Object Oriented Programming with VFP Chapter 09.pdf
Sample Chapter 09 Advanced Object Oriented Programming with VFP: Lately there's been a lot of hype about three-tiered development. The main idea is to split applications into different layers—the interface, the business logic and the data back end. Many people tout three-tiered development as the best thing since sliced bread. While it can't cure world hunger, it definitely helps me a great deal in my development efforts.

Using SourceSafe to Maintain a SourceSafe Database
sourcesafe_maintainsourcesafe.pdf
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe is a version control system used for storing source code, text files, web content or any other type or document where ownership, tracking and revision history is important. However, the Visual SourceSafe (VSS) database must have regular maintenance performed to ensure that it is kept in good shape and does not encounter corruption. Like remembering to get the oil changed or scheduling that appointment with the dentist, it is really easy to let maintenance slide. And like other maintenance chores, there can be serious consequences to neglect. This article shows how, with a little work up front, an administrator can automate the routine maintenance, keep an eye on what's going on, and be alerted to database problems. One of the real hassles with using SourceSafe's Analyze utility is interpreting the results intelligently. The method shown here minimizes the noise, so administrators can see right through to any changes they might need to be concerned with.

Using Visual FoxPro to Access Remote Data
Using Visual FoxPro to Acces Remote Data.doc
Microsoft® Visual FoxPro™ provides ways to connect to remote data of various types, including data created in non-tabular format, on different platforms, and from different products. You can get data of almost any type, as long as you know the format and have permission from the server administrator to access it. To do this, Visual FoxPro uses Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) technology, SQL drivers and language, and the speed and object-oriented programming features of Visual FoxPro. ODBC services are handled by the drivers available in your operating system and those supplied with Visual FoxPro. To use these services, you need to have information about your data source and, perhaps, a password.

Another way is to install a piece of software called VMWare on an existing OS. Then, use VMWare to create a shell in which the OS in question can be installed and then use the screen capture facilities of the existing OS to grab the screens of the OS being installed. Here's a detailed explanation of how this works.

UPD70_e.doc
Welcome to Version 7.0 of Visual Extend, the Application Development Framework for Visual FoxPro 6.0 and 7.0 Developers. This Version is totally focussed on even greater productivity, both during design time and during run time. In fact, we rewrote lots of code parts to make VFX Applications run even smoother than ever bevore. Also, all the builders have been updated and now better match the enhanced functionality. We did not abandon the great single tier and two tier emphasis of Visual Extend and think, that this version of Visual Extend is the best tool available for rapid application development in the file server and client/server environment. Although you may more and more encounter n-Tier Applications, a great Rapid Application Development environment for fileserver and especially client/server environments still pays off. Probably even more important in the todays challenging world that such applications are as competitive as never before. In our words: Let’s be more productive!

Web Pages: A Programmer's Perspective
Web Pages A Programmers Perspective.doc
In case you haven't noticed, the frenzy over the World Wide Web is not dying down, but rather it seems to become more intense with each passing day. New technologies and new Web browsers are encouraging the creation of "more active" and "smarter" Web pages. There is a definite move from the "static" type of pages (the ones you're used to seeing) toward ones rich in "active" content. This means lots of opportunities for Web page authors to get involved in creating active Web page content.

Web Services Part I

Web-services are the talk of the town. But what is it? Can I do this today or do I need to develop in C# or any other .NET language? What do I need? Where do I start? Next to these practical questions are the commercial questions like how to market and what is a useful service to build? In a series of articles on this new phenomenon I’ll hope to address all of these topics. In this first of these articles I start at the very bottom of it all. Samples used in the articles contain VBScript, Jscript, ASP, COM+ and Visual FoxPro code.

WebConnect: How a Web Page Works
WebRAD Building Database Apps on the Web with Web Connection Chapter 09.pdf
Sample Chapter 9 of WebRAD Building Database Apps on the Web with Web Connection: The language used on a Web page is HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. Hypertext is the part of the Web that allows for the linking together of Web content through the use of clickable “hyperlinks.” The markup language defines the document form. Remember back in grade school getting an essay back, “marked up” with symbols stating that an item should be capitalized, or a new paragraph should begin here? Well, that is pretty much what HTML does for a Web page. In this chapter I will cover what makes up a well formed Web page, what the different sections are, how to use JavaScript for form validations, and how Web Connection can process a page that contains embedded expressions.

An installfest is a special type of LUG meeting where people bring computers to the meeting and get help installing, updating, or tweaking their Linux installation. As a result, however, you're not forced to restart your machine due to problems with the GUI itself.
