ADS: Special issue Advantage Database Server for Visual FoxPro Developers
FoxRockX200804.pdf
Sybase (formerly Extended Systems) offers the new version 9.0 of Advantage Database Server. The first feature mentioned in the press release published March 17th, 2008 consists in the unique support for the Visual FoxPro file format. Now you can work with DBF tables on the server with no direct access to the tables by the end user, no damaged index files, and you can even use ODBC. Doug Hennig took a close look at the pros and cons from a VFP perspective in this free special issue of FoxRockX magazine.

This session takes you beyond the basics of business objects into advanced topics of creating, distributing and using business objects in the real world. See how the new features of Visual FoxPro 6 Service Pack 3 can help you create business objects that can automatically adapt and scale to their environment; whether it's a two-tier, three-tier or n-tier architecture. Learn how to overcome the inherent slowness of DCOM. Learn to create business objects with crisp boundaries and a well-balanced load of responsibilities. During this session you'll see live examples of business objects at work in a variety of settings from the desktop to the Internet, serving up Visual FoxPro cursors, HTML, XML and ADO recordsets.

Advanced Client Server
E_C_S.DOC
This session will look at several issues that arise when developing client server based applications using Visual FoxPro. The examples in this document use SQL Server as the back end but the concepts are applicable to most client server systems. We start by defining the problems faced when using optimistic vs. pessimistic buffering. This discussion is then extended to include the issues faced by notebook users or sites that only periodically exchange information with a host.

Advanced Client\Server in Visual FoxPro
Advanced Client Server in Visual FoxPro.doc
SQL pass-through allows for connection, and communication, with back end servers. Unlike remote views, connection information is not stored in the database but has to be re-established each time. Once the connection has been established, you can use other pass-through commands to execute stored procedures, back end triggers and rules, initiate remote transaction processing. Further, SQL pass-through commands can be used with Visual FoxPro parameters (with some limitations). The processing itself may occur in batch or non batch mode and in synchronous or asynchronous mode.

Advanced Client-Server Functionality in Visual FoxPro
Advanced Client Server Functionality in Visual FoxPro.doc
The advanced client-server capabilities of Microsoft Visual FoxPro™, for the most part, revolve around the setting of properties for named and unnamed connections, remote views, and cursors. These properties are readable through DBGETPROP, CURSORGETPROP and SQLGETPROP. Conversely, these properties can be written to using DBSETPROP, CURSORSETPROP and SQLSETPROP. In this paper we will be looking at different scenarios where these properties are manipulated to perform advanced client-server procedures. Specifically, we explore techniques for updating remote tables, fetching remote data, creating heterogeneous joins, dynamic view connections and shared view connections.

Advanced OLE Automation
E_AUTO.DOC
This session is not an introduction to OLE; rather, it is geared towards using OLE Automation to further application development. OLE Automation can be used for more than passing calculations through Excel or writing Word documents; OLE Automation can completely redefine the types of applications developers build and the way they build them. These session will focus on a wide variety of OLE Automation controls as well as two powerful tools, Microsoft Project and Visio as examples of advanced OLE Automation. Samples shown in the session will include building class diagrams with Visio and project plans with Microsoft Project. Also discussed are the different ways integration can work: hidden, where the automation server lies hidden on the users’ desktop or; visual where the OLE object has a graphical entity that the user can "look & feel".

Advanced VFP Output: Above & Beyond the Report Form
E-HIGH.doc

Advanced Visual FoxPro Controls
Advanced Visual FoxPro Controls.doc
Controls are the means by which the user interacts with a Visual FoxPro Application. Therefore the quality and capabilities of an application, as measured by the end-user, are directly related to how well the user is able to manipulate the application through the application’s controls. No matter how well a data model is implemented, the application cannot be considered a success if the user-interface is clumsy or inefficient. The goal of this session is to describe in detail the Visual FoxPro control set and demonstrate how to implement good solid user interfaces using Visual FoxPro controls.

Haven't you always wished you could create data driven web pages the easy way, without having to deal with such complicated terms as CGI, ISAPI, or Java? Wouldn't it be absolutely fantastic if you could process code directly on web pages, maybe even with a kind of BROWSE, to display data in tables? Look no further! AFP let you run code directly inside an HTML Internet page – and even use a BROWSE -- of sorts!

An Object Factory
Factory Classes.doc
If you have been using Visual FoxPro for any period of time you are undoubtedly very familiar with the CREATEOBJECT() function. Many developers use this function directly and liberally throughout the source code of their application. In many situations, this is perfectly acceptable; in many other situations this approach is far too inflexible.

Application Development: Anatomy of the Visual FoxPro Development Cycle
E_APP.DOC
Take a peek inside the development of a Visual FoxPro application. There are a lot of new concepts and ideas that need to be considered as well as pitfalls and traps. Using the example of a transaction-based event-driven system, the session describes the building blocks of OOP as they are used in building an application framework. This is not a session about theory but about how to apply the OOP theory in practice and business development.

Applications with Large Databases
211_VAL.DOC
This session will focus on issues such as performance, maintenance, and practicality as they apply to very large systems developed with FoxPro. You cannot be complacent about even the most fundamental issues when working with huge data sets. Small mistakes which are often overlooked in simple applications become magnified to render a large system useless. With proper planning however, and a thorough understanding of the application and it’s intended use, a robust system can be built to rival even mainframe based systems. This applies not only to the application but to the actual storage and management of data as well.

Basic three-tier-application building
V18 Basic three-tier-application building.ppt
You've certainly heard about Three-Tier Applications. But has a car with three tiers ever been a big seller? As far as I know, it hasn't, and the same goes for Multi-Tier Applications. In general they need many more than just three tiers to really bring about the advantages promised. But has a car with 6 or more tiers (also known as a truck) ever been really fast? So someone tells you to be "scalable". This means that different tiers are attached to different cars and they should all roll along together in the same direction. Sounds like a real management and integration problem, doesn't it? (So you need more server hardware, more server operating systems, more software of all kinds, and, uh yes, consultants.) Maybe you have to get rid of some tiers to become fast again. Consider a motorbike! It runs fast on two tiers, and in heavy traffic in the city it curves around all those cars with more tiers. That said, we will build a multi-tiered application and afterwards think about how to get rid of certain tiers in special circumstances.

Building Applications Using Class Libraries
E_CLAS.DOC
This session focuses on how class libraries will help us create better applications, faster. Class libraries are more than just a group of objects that are dropped on a form. They are the nucleus of all applications. We will explore how to design reusable class libraries that can be utilized throughout the application development cycle. The applications we create will be easy to maintain and enhance. You will be able to leverage the class structure in every application you create. With the right set of tools, building an application becomes a "plug and play" job. At the same time, maintenance becomes a breeze.

Building Distributed Applications over HTTP
Internet Applications with VFP Chapter 07.pdf
Sample Chapter 7 of Internet Applications with VFP: HTTP is much more than just a protocol used by the Web browser for transmitting HTML. In this chapter I'll show you how to use HTTP generically from a Visual FoxPro client application to execute logic on a Web server that is also running Visual FoxPro. You'll see how to retrieve content and data over HTTP, fire logic on the server and handle bidirectional transfer of data using familiar SQL commands over HTTP. This approach allows you to build rich GUI applications that take advantage of the distributed nature of the Internet without having to conform to a limited HTML interface. Using the techniques described here, you can extend the reach of existing applications across the Internet with minimal amounts of code—using all native Visual FoxPro code.

Building Internet applications with VFP components
E-INT.doc
This session will focus on using VFP COM server components in Active Server Pages running on Microsoft's Internet Information Server. ASP is Microsoft's premier technology for building web back-end logic and it offers easy access to VFP business objects. We will start off with an overview of ASP architecture, placing particular emphasis on the ASP objects most useful to VFP developers. Then we will review the basics of how to build VFP COM server objects and how to call them from ASP. We will look at the relationship between web authoring tools such as MS FrontPage and your back end data. Issues such as scalability and security will also be examined. This session will show you how to get started on E-Business and E-Commerce applications quickly, using skills you already have. Presentation in english/deutsche sheets.

Building Middle Tier Objects in Visual Foxpro
E-TIER.doc
We hear the term used in many places and for many things, but what does it actually mean and why should we care about it? This session will introduce you to the N-Tier system architecture. We will investigate exactly what N-tier is and isn’t. The architecture will be described as well as the problems that this design addresses. Finally we will see Visual FoxPro used to build an N-tier architecture model. The session is aimed at the intermediate to advanced Visual FoxPro developer. The session will examine current system designs and see how the N-Tier model differs from these. Various tiers commonly used will be examined. The influence of the Internet and Intranets will be seen. We will also examine the use of COM with Visual FoxPro in producing N-Tier solutions.

Building Server Services with VFP
V17 Building Server Services with VFP.ppt
A remote application on the server is very useful if you've got a network application. In contrast to a call via CreateObjectX, a server application running as a service is really separated from the front-end application, and it continues working when the user logs off (or even never logs in). You can use it for database reorganisation, backups, or long-running or scheduled business tasks. In this session you will learn how to build, install (on Windows NT) and use such a service, which problems may arise, and how to integrate with COM objects. Additionally you will see a running example of a server service.

Building Three-Tier Client-Server Business Solutions
Building Three Tier Client Server Business Solutions.doc
Multitier architecture offers a compelling way to develop client-server business solutions. It is technology-neutral and can be implemented on any vendor’s technology that enables standard interfaces for each of the logical levels called “tiers.” With an emphasis on clean interfaces between tiers, the implementation details are hidden from users. The functionality of each tier, called “components,” can be written in many different languages and maintained independently. This capacity allows the developer to use many tools from his or her toolbox to get the job done quickly and correctly. Just as you wouldn’t expect a carpenter to have only a hammer, a developer will not have only a single development tool.

With a membership of about 1000 persons and companies, the German speaking FoxPro User Group (dFPUG) ranges among the larger ones of the user groups of software and database developers in the German-speaking Microsoft world. To its members the dFPUG offers ample services and technical support with object-oriented programming and relational database design in Visual FoxPro and SQL Server. Among the services of the dFPUG there are the loose-leaf periodical “FoxxProfessional” (200 pages per quarter), a large website including an online forum, regional meetings in twelve cities and the annual FoxPro developers conference in Frankfurt. On its 10th anniversary, the user group intended to rework its publishing process as well as the retrieval facilities for technical documents to make them much faster and more efficient. Today, the new portal provides powerful online access to the large and varied stock of published material.

Converting Your Existing Applications to Visual FoxPro 3.doc
Visual FoxPro 3.0 has opened up a wealth of new developer tools that can only be considered as revolutionary for the FoxPro programmer. From object orientation to visual form and class tools, the whole application scheme has been revamped. Even though Visual FoxPro’s new environment provides a whole new way of doing things, your existing FoxPro 2.6 application can be almost seamlessly integrated into this brave new developer environment. The expansiveness of the new FoxPro features can be daunting, but this is mitigated by the conversion utilities built into VFP. This paper will look at how you go about converting your existing 2.6 application in Visual FoxPro. With this conversion you can start using these wonderful new features while still leveraging your existing development investment.

Creating a Successful FoxPro Product
E_BUS1.DOC
If you're a developer, it's likely that you think of good ideas faster than you can do anything with them. It's also likely that you've had at least one idea for a "million dollar" product during your career. Maybe it was a clever utility you wrote to help your client with some problem, or perhaps it was a new vertical market application that you thought of while talking to a prospect. The temptation to create a product is strong and inbred to programmers. And from personal experience, I promise that if you decide to go ahead, it will be one the most exciting, frightening, educational, and rewarding experiences you've ever had -- even if you go broke in the end.

Creating Parameter Objects: The Basics
Creating Parameter Objects.doc
Parameter objects are simply a construct that allows you to pass multiple parameters into a method call using one object to do it. This approach simplifies the method’s signature by reducing the number of parameters passed into the method from an itemized list to only one.

Cron Explained
cron_explained.pdf
You can't get far in the Linux world without hearing the words, "Oh, just set up a cronjob to do that for you!" Cron? Cronjob? Sounds uncomfortable, maybe even a bit nasty. This whitepaper describes what cron is and how to use it. It describes what cron, cronjobs and crontabs are, how cron works, how to edit crontabs and how to set up cronjobs, and how to work with cron output via email and log files.

Custom OLE Servers
Custom OLE Servers.doc
An application that can be an OLE Automation Server multiplies its usefulness to the modern computer environment. A stand-alone application like Microsoft Excel has many graphing, mathematical, statistical, and financial functions. Other applications can take advantage of these functions simply by programmatically calling Microsoft Excel. The end user of the app doesn't even need to know that Microsoft Excel is being used.

Customizing Your Development Environment
Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation Chapter 16.pdf
Sample Chapter 15 of Fundamentals Building Visual Studio Apps on a VFP Foundation: It never ceases to amaze me to walk into a development shop and see how the developers work. The most mind-numbing experience is to watch a developer start up Visual FoxPro, and then issue three or four attempts of the “CD <current app dev directory>” command as his first step—because VFP’s default location is still set somewhere deep in the bowels of Program Files. Think of all the time you spend building applications to make other people more productive. Doesn’t it make sense to tune your own work environment? In this chapter, I’ll show you a number of techniques that you can use to make your daily work easier and more bug-proof.

Data - Views
Effective Techniques for Application Development with VFP Chapter 05.pdf
Sample Chapter 5 of Effective Techniques for Application Development with VFP: Views, a new feature introduced with Visual FoxPro, provide a way to take a new approach to many aspects of our applications. At the simplest, views represent a way of storing queries within the Visual FoxPro database container. They can, if desired, be used exclusively to provide the interface between forms, code and the data tables.

Data Design
Data Design.doc
Designing an application requires many decisions even before you begin writing the first line of code. Obviously, the first decision must be to define the purpose of the program. Then you need to determine what features you need, including reports, data entry screens, data display screens, and menus. This is also a good time to determine what data must be stored to support these activities and how to structure this data into logical tables.

DataBase Integrity
E-Case.doc
When designing and maintaining a database, it is essential that you preserve the database integrity. If you don`t you have, at best, not done your job. At worse, you have done a disservice to your client. The most efficient way to implement Referential Integrity is by using triggers, a poorly understood technique. Although VFP supports triggers and automatically generates Referential Integrity code, its implementation has many shortcomings. This session will demonstrate how to overcome these deficiencies and provide you with a firm understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of enforcing database integrity.

Database Maintenance and Integrity
E_CASE.DOC
In the past, the issue of database design in the PC environment has been very much neglected by both the developers of database applications and by the providers of development tools. There are many reasons for this. Due to the hardware limitations in processing power as well as disk space, developers developed database applications which were necessarily small and simple for use by a single user. Well aware of the hardware limitations, customers were neither demanding nor sophisticated. They were prepared to computerize only a small segment of their business without going into every detail and without really knowing for what to ask. As they could not have an ambitious information system containing 100% of all relevant information, they settled for very small databases containing few tables.

Debugging and Error Handling in an Object-Oriented Environment
E_ERR.DOC
VFP will make some changes in the way your applications handle errors, and the way you cope with them during development, too. This session will concentrate on code strategies to log and respond to errors in applications. It will also take a look at the FoxPro debugging tools to see how they "react" to the changes in the Fox language and event model.

Deciding on a Distribution: How and Why I Chose RedHat
installation_decidingonadistributor.doc
I began working with Linux seriously around the middle of summer of 2002 - Fourth of July week to be exact. My plan at the time was to install a number of distributions and evaluate each of them from the point of view of a Windows developer learning Linux. I was prepared for a lot of hard work, learning a lot, running into roadblocks, and generally getting my hands really dirty 'under the hood'.
